Our neighbor

Our neighbor, the one in front of us, is so much like our family. They keep to themselves. You won’t see them much unless they go out of their house to go to work or to school or to church.

The head of the family is working abroad. Before he went away, he talked to my dad first, asking him to please check his family from time to time, just to make sure they’re okay. My dad’s not meddling with the family left behind but when something’s happening in our neighborhood, he knocks on their door and tells them to be alert. When the head of the family came back for a month-long vacation, they gave us pasalubong, which we weren’t expecting. It was much appreciated, of course.

At first, I didn’t like this neighbor of ours. But in the long run, I realized that neighbors who are sensitive to the need of others for some peace and quiet are better than those who pretend to care about your family but are only after some gossip to feed others.
